For this project, Clockwork Underfloor Heating provided a fully managed service that included the installation of poured insulation, an underfloor heating system and liquid floor screed.

The brief

MW Builders Ltd brought us into this redevelopment of a large, detached house in Macclesfield to install the poured insulation, underfloor heating system and screed across the entire ground floor. This included a kitchen diner extension.

A fully managed multi-service package from a single source supplier

Our builder clients know that working with Clockwork means one point of contact and a fully managed service. MW Builders wanted Clockwork’s expertise in underfloor heating, insulation and floor screed so that they could focus on other areas of the project.

In our experience, builders also prefer to subcontract underfloor heating installations to save time and avoid costly remedial work due to a poorly installed system.

As with all our fully managed multi-service packages, on this project we worked to our 4 step process:

Step 1: Planning and design

A meticulously designed underfloor heating system reaps benefits for property owners and users. As a single source supplier of insulation, the underfloor heating system and the floor screed, we can plan and design the most cost-effective, robust and high performance system for a specific space and its users.

On this project we were briefed on the needs of the homeowner and their energy goals to design a bespoke underfloor heating system, using CAD (computer-aided design) software, that will benefit them for many years.

Step 2: Laying poured insulation

Clockwork Underfloor Heating has the advantage over other suppliers of having a sister company that supplies and installs poured insulation and liquid floor screed.

The poured insulation supplied by Clockwork Screed enhances the efficiency of the underfloor heating system by offering unbeatable insulation values and minimising heat loss. It also has an impressive minimum compressive strength of 110 kPa, and it can be easily and efficiently poured to directly where it is needed, without mess or wastage.

Step 3: Installing the underfloor heating system

Clockwork Underfloor Heating supplies both wet and dry (electric) underfloor heating systems.

For this project the client chose a wet underfloor heating system which we connected to the boiler to circulate warm water from the central heating system. A wet underfloor heating system operates at lower temperatures than radiators which results in lower operating costs over time. This is hugely beneficial for larger homes. Dry underfloor heating systems cost more to run but they are usually cheaper to install.

Step 4: Pumping liquid floor screed onto the underfloor heating system.

We mixed our cementitious liquid floor screed on site to the exact volume required, and pumped it directly to all areas of the ground floor, again without mess or wastage. Because the liquid screed self-compacts it doesn’t produce bubbles or voids around the pipework. It is also self-levelling which creates smooth, level floors ready for tiles, laminate, hardwood flooring or any other final floor finish.

The screed can be laid as thinly as 25mm and it dries very quickly, usually allowing footfall within 48 hours, so the process didn’t hold up the rest of the project.

Benefits to the builder and the homeowner

  • Expertise and a single source supplier – the builder was able to defer to a single team of experts for all elements of the underfloor heating installation
  • Onsite mixing meant that the builder only paid for the amount of insulation and screed they used
  • Because the insulation and screed were pumped directly to where they were needed there was no mess or wastage
  • Our meticulous planning and design of a bespoke underfloor heating system will provide the homeowner with long term cost-effective heating, and reduce their carbon footprint
  • Robust, high performance products and expert installation will provide many years of service to the homeowner.
