Complete guide to choosing the best underfloor heating system
There are two categories of underfloor heating system: wet and dry.
Wet underfloor heating systems
Wet underfloor heating systems are connected to the boiler. They distribute warm water from the central heating system through a continuous network of plastic pipes which minimises the risk of leakages and therefore provides maintenance-free heating. A wet underfloor heating system operates at lower water temperatures than radiators which makes it the perfect energy efficient heat source for larger homes or rooms.
There are different types of wet underfloor heating systems to choose from:
- Screed Systems
Screed systems, which have concrete screed laid over the pipework, are known to provide the best possible output of heat. This makes them the most cost effective option.
Ideal for: New constructions and extensions
Renewable heat sources such as heat pumps
To note: There must be enough space for the system, typically around 200mm depth.

- Low Profile Underfloor Heating Systems
A perfect solution for when floor height is limited, low profile systems have a slim profile of just 18mm. They comprise of a simple board and pipe layout. Tiles can be laid directly onto the boards which eliminates the need for screed.
Ideal for: Renovations or retrofits, or wherever floor height is an issue
To note: Additional levelling compounds or ply boards are not required.

- Suspended Floor Underfloor Heating Systems
For homes of a suspended timber floor construction where the floors are held above the ground by joists, a suspended floor underfloor heating system is the ideal choice.
Ideal for: Basements that don’t have a solid floor, or upper floors with joists
To note: A screed or dampproof membrane is not required.
Dry Underfloor Heating Systems
Dry underfloor heating systems are essentially electric systems. They are made of heating cables, ribbons and films, and are ideal for spaces where plumbing is not available, such as conservatories. They are also easier to install than wet systems in small spaces like bathrooms.
- Loose wire dry underfloor heating systems are ideal for unconventional shaped rooms
- Dry systems with matting are designed for tile and stone floors
- Foil mat systems are designed for laminate flooring.
Cost comparison of underfloor heating systems
Wet underfloor heating systems are more expensive to install than dry systems, but they are cheaper to run.
Maintenance costs for both systems are very low.
