The combination of screed and underfloor heating systems is synonymous with warm, cosy rooms with efficient, even heat distribution throughout.
Clockwork Underfloor Heating designs and installs underfloor heating systems and, in collaboration with our sister company Clockwork Screed, supplies and lays cementitious liquid screed on top to produce a smooth, level floor.
Subfloor preparation for underfloor heating
Thorough preparation is key to the successful installation of an underfloor heating system in a screed floor.
- The subfloor must be checked to ensure it is level, dry and clean
- Edge insulation should be installed around the perimeter of the room for thermal bridging, and to allow the screed to expand without cracking
- The installation of a damp-proof membrane (DPM) is recommended to prevent the build-up of moisture. This is particularly important on concrete subfloors.
Insulation for underfloor heating in screed floors
Once the subfloor preparation is complete, insulation should be applied to prevent the loss of heat downwards into the subfloor. At Clockwork UFH we install poured insulation rather than insulation boards due to its superior strength and insulation values, and its reduced environmental impact.
How to install underfloor heating pipework
Once the insulation is dry, the UFH pipes can be laid, usually in a spiral or loop configuration around 150mm to 200mm apart to ensure the heat is distributed evenly throughout the room. In cold rooms such as conservatories pipes are sometimes laid as closely as 100mm for a higher heat output.
For efficient operation and to avoid mechanical failure, no single pipe loop should exceed 100mm in length (around 20-25 sqm).
To prevent floating, the pipes should be clipped securely to the insulation layer.
Test the UFH system before applying liquid screed
It is essential that the underfloor heating system is pressure tested before applying liquid screed to ensure there are no leaks.
The liquid screed is then laid at a depth of 45-50mm, including the UFH pipes, to ensure optimal system performance and fast response times. Other types of screed may require 65-75mm which impacts the system’s performance.
Clockwork’s cementitious liquid screed is formulated to produce exceptional thermal conductivity. It also self-levels and self-compacts so that air pockets don’t form around the pipework which would result in heat loss and reduced system efficiency.
Clockwork Underfloor Heating’s 4 step process for UFH installations
Clockwork Underfloor Heating works to a 4 step process for UFH installations which covers all key points raised above:
Step 1: Planning and design. We use CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology to design the most effective underfloor heating system for the specific needs of the client
Step 2: Insulation. We lay high quality poured insulation to prevent heat loss
Step 3: UFH system installation. We install the underfloor heating system using the best quality components
Step 4: Apply screed. We work with our sister company Clockwork Screed to lay quality, high-strength liquid screed to provide a smooth, level floor for the application of a final floor covering.
