Liquid screed floors are ideal for underfloor heating for several reasons:
- Exceptional thermal efficiency and conductivity – acting as a thermal mass, screed absorbs heat from the underfloor heating pipework. The heat is then slowly released to provide consistent, evenly distributed warmth throughout a room
- Thin layer of application – liquid screed from Clockwork Screed is extremely strong so can be laid as thinly as 25mm which further enhances the distribution of heat. Such a thin application also means the cost of the screed is minimised
- Fast response times – a screed floor enhances the responsiveness of the underfloor heating system so the room becomes warm very quickly. Again, this is due to the thermal conductivity and thin layer of screed
- No voids around the pipework – liquid screed self-compacts, effortlessly covering all of the pipework. This means that gaps or voids around the pipes, from which heat could escape, are avoided
- Ideal partner for poured insulation – insulation is essential for preventing loss of heat down into the ground, and maximising the performance of the underfloor heating system. Working with Clockwork Screed, we can supply and install high performance poured insulation before we install the underfloor heating system
- Smooth finish – liquid screed self-levels so provides a smooth, level finish ready for the application of a final floor covering.
Types of underfloor heating suitable for screed floors
Screed underfloor heating systems are the perfect solution for new builds and extensions, as well as retrofit projects.
Both wet and dry underfloor heating systems are suitable for screed floors.
Wet underfloor heating systems are run from a boiler or air source heat pump which directs hot water to the underfloor heating system through the network of pipes.
Dry underfloor heating systems are run by electricity. They consist of heating cables, ribbons, and films. Loose wire configurations are ideal for rooms of a non-standard shape, while matting systems are designed for tile and stone floors. The foil mat system was developed specifically for laminated flooring.
