Water underfloor heating is a cost-effective way to heat your home or commercial building.
Water underfloor heating
When choosing between a dry (electric) underfloor heating system and water underfloor heating system (connected to a boiler or other heat source), a water system is usually found to be more effective in larger spaces due to the range of cost and efficiency benefits it provides.
Benefits of water underfloor heating systems
The benefits of water underfloor heating systems include:
- Reduced energy consumption
Water underfloor heating systems operate at lower temperatures than traditional radiators. Wet UFH systems heat water to around 35°C to 55°C whereas radiators need to reach 65°C to 75°C to generate the same level of warmth.
- Lower energy bills
At a time when energy costs are spiralling out of control, wet underfloor heating systems offer the huge advantage of being cheaper to run than traditional radiators due to the lower operating temperatures.
- Compatibility with renewable technologies
Water underfloor heating systems can be paired with renewable heat technologies such as ground or air source heat pumps, reducing energy consumption and running costs even further.
- Even heat distribution
While radiators produce hot and cold spots depending on their location within a room, water underfloor heating systems cover the entire floor area so produce an even distribution of heat for added comfort.
- Space saving for versatile interior design
Underfloor heating systems are hidden away so don’t take up any space in a room. This not only allows for greater creativity with interior design; the absence of radiators also improves the overall aesthetic of the room.
What to look for in a water underfloor heating system
When choosing a water underfloor heating system, there are various factors to consider regarding the space and the system.
- Screed wet underfloor heating systems are ideal for projects in which a concrete screed is to be laid, such as new builds or extensions. They require an available depth of around 200mm.
- Low profile underfloor heating systems are constructed of a board and pipe layout that only requires 18mm of depth and no additional levelling compound.
- Suspended wet underfloor heating systems can be laid on a solid concrete floor without screed or a dampproof membrane (DPM). As such they are ideal for basements, ground floors or upper floors with joists.
How much does a water underfloor heating system cost?
The cost of a water underfloor heating system will depend on the size, layout and location of the room for which it is being installed.
To install, a water underfloor heating system is more expensive than its dry (electric) underfloor heating system counterpart, but it is significantly cheaper to run. A water underfloor heating system is also cheaper to run than traditional radiators due to the lower operating temperatures.

FAQs
What maintenance does a water underfloor heating system need?
Very little. If it is given an annual service there shouldn’t be any further maintenance required. The continuous network of pipes means that a leak is highly unlikely, and there is no issue with limescale because of the low operating temperatures, even if you have hard water.
Can a water underfloor heating system be installed on an upper floor of a property?
Yes. Underfloor heating is not restricted to ground floors.
Can I connect an underfloor heating system to my existing central heating system?
Yes. Water UFH systems can be connected to gas, oil or LPG boilers, as well as air or ground source heat pumps or biomass boilers.
