Wet underfloor heating systems run from a boiler or heat pump. The screed subfloor over the underfloor heating system distributes heat evenly throughout the room. Screed is known to enhance the performance of wet underfloor heating systems.

How wet underfloor heating systems work
The wet underfloor heating system circulates warm water from the boiler or heat pump through a network of pipes that covers the entire footprint of a room. This allows the UFH system to radiate heat from the pipes up through the screed floor to the room above. Unlike radiators, there are no hot or cold spots because the heat is evenly distributed.
Benefits of using screed with wet underfloor heating
The cementitious liquid screed supplied by Clockwork Screed is exceptionally strong, so can be laid as thinly as 25mm, allowing heat to flow easily from the pipework into the room. By saving space in depth, using our liquid screed with underfloor heating allows room for uprating the poured insulation which is a critical component of underfloor heating design.
Our liquid screed was formulated to offer exceptional thermal conductivity, making it ideal for UFH systems. It also self-compacts so all pipes are completely covered without voids from which heat could escape.
By optimising the effectiveness of the underfloor heating system, screed improves a building’s energy efficiency which results in reduced costs.
Drying times and curing guidelines
Drying times and curing guidelines vary according to the type of screed used for underfloor heating. Liquid screed usually takes 7 days to dry if using a green screed adhesive, or 21 days for a conventional adhesive. Traditional sand and cement screeds take much longer; approximately 1mm a day for the first 40mm of screed and then 0.5mm for every day thereafter.
The UFH system shouldn’t be switched on for the first 7 days. After 7 days it can be set to a low flow temperature of around 20-25°C, and then gradually increased at a rate of 5°C a day until the system’s maximum temperature is reached.
If these guidelines aren’t followed, the screed is put at risk of warping, cracking, adhesive failure and the growth of mould.
Common installation challenges and how to avoid them
Common UFH installation challenges include:
- Poor or inadequate insulation
- Incorrect pipework layouts that cause cold spots
- Adhesive failure
- Insufficient drying time
- Incompatible floor coverings
- Unsuitable sensor placement recording incorrect temperatures
These issues can be avoided with comprehensive planning, sufficient drying times for the screed, pre-screed testing on the concrete subfloor or on the screed itself before a final floor covering is applied, and using the correct adhesive.
